On Monday 16 December, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr Ziad Khoueir, an ophthalmologist working in Dubai and Lebanon, who presented the profession to the grade 8 students as part of their exploration of future career choices. He began by sharing an intriguing fact: did you know that the eye is actually part of the brain? This was just one of the many fascinating insights the students learnt during the session.
Dr Khoueir explained what ophthalmology is, described his daily routine, and outlined the educational path required for this career. He also shared practical tips for maintaining eye health, including reducing screen time, spending time outdoors, avoiding rubbing the eyes, eating a balanced diet, and getting sufficient sleep.
The students were excited about examining a lens used in eye check-ups and learnt how cutting-edge technology plays a vital role in eye surgery. The session concluded with a lively Q&A session, during which the students asked thoughtful questions, with some expressing an interest in pursuing a career in the medical field.
