On Tuesday 10 March, the MYP 1 students visited the Puppet Theatre in Ljubljana. We saw the long-awaited performance using live drawing as the characters and background to tell the story about the absurdity of war and its horrors. What do the atrocities of war look like through children’s eyes? It is only through this perspective that we can fully understand the absurdity of war. This topic is quite delicate and painful; therefore, it often remains concealed. It is, however, quite necessary to discuss it, especially in front of the youngest audience.
Prior to the viewing, we had two lessons to prepare the students for the delicate topic and discuss which learning objectives we would pay attention to while watching. We focused on the technique, the use of light, sound, and music that accompanied the performance. The students analysed the impact of these as well as the background on the story and its message.
We concluded with a short reflection and are looking forward to a more thorough analysis next week at theatre lessons.
