On Thursday 15 October, 5M had a Solar System Workshop. This was the first of our collapsed days.
The students made the eight planets from clay while working in small groups. We used a scale for both the size of the planets and for the distance of the planets from the sun. Through trial and error, each group calculated the distances and came to the final measurements.
The students were also responsible for painting their planets and added details such as Saturn’s rings, as well as making labels and stands. We used a large Kin Ball supplied by Mr Denis to represent our Sun. Each group measured their planet’s distance from the Sun and placed their planet at the end.
After the break, each group stood next to their planet and gave a one-minute presentation, which took a lot of poise. Students from other classes and their own classmates listened.
After reflections, many students said they were surprised by how small the inner planets are and how far away the outer planets are. Many of them also presented to the class for the first time this year and, overall, I am very pleased with their effort.
