The School Council – Student Voices In Action

On Monday 3 February, four representatives from the international department joined the national department student representatives for a meeting with our school leadership and teachers.

This meeting was part of the School Council’s work and focused on the theme of the ‘School System.’ The student representatives highlighted the issues they see in the current system, concentrating on four key areas: teaching methods, relationships and collaboration, learning content, and values and responsibilities.

During the meeting the students, teachers, and school leadership engaged in a constructive discussion, exchanging ideas, strategies, and proposals. The students emphasized several key points, including the need for greater mutual respect among all members of the school community, reduced parental involvement in their learning, more practical work and life lessons, stricter consequences for misbehaviour, stronger collaboration between the international and national departments as well as between younger and older students, clearly defined learning goals, and an assessment system that values hard work over natural talent.

Following the meeting, on Tuesday 4 February, Alina Mia from MYP 3 presented the discussed topics to all the international department teachers. This was followed by a workshop in which the teachers planned new initiatives and activities based on the students’ concerns and suggestions. At the end of the workshop, everyone agreed to focus on improving at least one of the proposed areas.

Further discussions on these topics will continue at the regional Children’s Parliament, which will be hosted at our school on Tuesday 11 February. Students from various schools across Ljubljana will gather to explore solutions and strategies for enhancing the school system. Our department will be represented by three students: Karin Isabel, Kyrylo, and Alina Mia.
